In the UK, a person who is proficient in both British Sign Language (BSL) and English is generally known as a BSL / English Interpreter. They are still sometimes mistakenly referred to as a ‘deaf interpreter’ or ‘sign language interpreter’ as, in the simplest of terms, they interpret between Deaf* and hearing people to enable successful communication.
Prestige Network can supply an interpreter qualified in BSL for any situation. Our BSL / English Interpreters are experienced in providing full translation to convey not only the meaning of the words but also the feelings behind the words which are so often vital when we interact. Our efficient and friendly service will find an interpreter to suit your needs whether you are an individual or an organisation in the public or private sector.
British Sign Language
* The use of the word ‘Deaf’ (with a capital ‘D’) refers to a person whose preferred language is British Sign Language (BSL) whereas ‘deaf’ (with a lowercase ‘d’) refers to any person with a significant hearing loss.
An interpreter for the Deaf, more correctly known as a BSL / English Interpreter, translates words into sign language and vice versa, bridging the communicate barrier that can exist between Deaf and hearing people.
An experienced interpreter is the key to effective communication and a trained BSL / English Interpreter will possess all the necessary skills to convey the required meaning, as well as being proficient in the English language.
In the UK, interpreters work in British Sign Language, and will make hand movements, facial expressions as well as using body language to express themselves. There are many versions of sign language throughout the world including an international sign language, called International Sign (IS).
The services of an interpreter are used for many occasions, from a wedding to a job interview, a doctor, hospital or optician’s appointment, or ante-natal classes to business meetings, conferences and training courses and so on. The possibilities are endless and the services of a BSL / English Interpreter can be used for virtually anything at all depending on the occasion when communication between BSL users and English speakers is required.
All our interpreters are professionally qualified and remain objective and unbiased during their interpretation assignments. All work they undertake is 100% confidential. Prestige Network works only with qualified and/or registered BSL / English Interpreters, so you can be rest assured that our interpreters can meet your requirements as well as provide you with a fast, accurate and sensitive service at all times.
A BSL interpreter’s main aim is to bridge accurately and efficiently the language gap that can exist between Deaf and hearing people, ensuring that communication between these two parties is understood and, more importantly, successful. Prestige Network is the UK's largest language communications specialist and can provide an experienced interpreter for all your BSL / English Interpreting requirements.
British Sign Language (BSL) is the language used by Deaf people in the UK to communicate and has been recognised by the UK government as a language in its own right since March 2003. It is the first and preferred language of many Deaf people and is also used by their hearing relatives, colleagues and others working within the British Deaf community.
According to the Department of Work and Pensions, BSL is used by around 70,000 people in the UK.
Prestige Network offers a wide range of services in over 300 languages, and all of our services are available in BSL. We can provide face-to-face interpreters as well as various translations in a wide range of formats including video, DVD or via the internet etc. in order to meet your individual needs, making your business or services more widely accessible to the Deaf community.
